After being hidden away for years, a copy of the original Superman and Friends comic book is expected to fetch about US$400,000 ($620,000), a comic expert told CNN on Thursday.

About 100 copies of the No. 1 edition are known to exist.

The auction is attracting a lot of interest, said Mr Stephen Fishler, owner of Comic Connect, a website for comic book buyers and sellers.

'One bidder wanted to trade his Ferrari for the comic book, as part of an under-the-table deal,' Mr Fishler joked.

The comic book is unique.

'Of the 100 existing copies, 80 per cent have been restored, but people want an untouched copy,' he said. The book is listed in 'fine' condition, a six on the 10-point rating scale.

'It's the Holy Grail of comic books,' Mr Fishler said.

Co-created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the comic book first appeared on newsstands for US$0.10 a copy in June1938.

Lost, then found

The owner, who wants to remain unidentified, bought the book 12 years later in a second-hand bookstore after persuading his dad to part with US$0.35.

He found the book again after having lost it in his mother's basement in 1966.

'I've known Action Comics to sell (a comic book) for around US$750,000,' comic book sales associate Bill Peterson told CNN.

'I don't have any intention on making a bid, but I know people who don't mind dropping several thousand for a classic comic.'

The auction will last two weeks.
