Qantas is gettting crappy....

Yes ... QF77 which i was on, was the one that had to turn back to Perth. We flew off and midway we had to turn back... and ... my goodness !!! One of the engine shutdown and we did not even know. There was fire truck and ambulance on standby at the airport when we arrive.

Better to stay on Tiger or some other airline. I think a CRASH will be imminent for Qantas, so many problems with their planes... and 5 hour wait at the airport.

Below is the report : Photos updated later

Sydney - A Qantas Airways jet aborted a flight to Singapore and returned to the Australian west coast city of Perth after one of its two engines was shut down, news reports said Saturday.

The Airbus A330 with 168 passengers aboard turned back Friday when an engine oil warning light flashed in the cockpit.

Aviation sources told The Sydney Morning Herald that the engine starter motor failed because maintenance engineers in Hong Kong had forgotten to oil the motor after an overhaul last week.

'Initial inspections by engineers indicate that the fault with the engine starter motor could have led to the engine oil problem,' engineering general manager David Cox told the newspaper.

All Qantas A330s are serviced overseas, and this particular aircraft returned to Australia last week from a four-day service in Hong Kong.

Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) spokesman Peter Gibson confirmed preliminary reports that the malfunction had originated in the starter motor and that the oil supply was being looked at.

'CASA has been kept fully informed on the incident by Qantas and will be closely monitoring Qantas' investigation of the event,' Gibson said.

Recent maintenance-related problems at the airline include a Singapore-London flight terminating in the German city of Frankfurt after one of its engines had to be shut down.

A faulty rudder delayed a plane from London for 15 hours, and an internal flight was forced into an unscheduled landing because ground crew had forgotten to empty its toilet tanks.

Qantas, which has never lost an aircraft in an accident, has been severely embarrassed by the run of misfortune.

The end of Australia Economy

Below is a report of the new IR law. This does not come at a worst time especially when Australia is heading for a recession... unions are well known for people workers benefit before economy. Often the people in unions do not consider other factor when striking for better wages. and what is worse they might cause the economy to go crashing through higher wage demand... I wonder... if in good times they demand higher wage.. then if in bad times will UNIONs sacrifice to bring wages down to make the economy more competitive.

I suppose unions are a double edged sword, keeping the right balance is always the key

Labor swings balance to workers with new IR laws

Brad Norington | November 26, 2008
Article from: The Australian

UNION officials will win the right to enter workplaces around the nation, including sites where they have no members, as part of sweeping changes to industrial laws proposed by the Rudd Government.

As the Government celebrated one year in office, Julia Gillard yesterday unveiled Labor's much-anticipated legislation to abolish the Coalition's Work Choices laws and create a new regime based on collective bargaining.

Describing it as a new era of industrial relations, the Acting Prime Minister and Workplace Relations Minister yesterday introduced into parliament a 600-page bill that significantly tilts the balance of power back to workers and unions.

In rewriting the nation's industrial relations laws from scratch, Ms Gillard's legislation goes much further than Labor promised at the election by allowing union entry to worksites provided people perform work on the premises and are entitled to be represented by the union concerned.

The package, which demolishes John Howard's Work Choices laws, introduced in 2006, also relaxes rules on outlawing strike pay, allows employer lockouts only in response to strike action and gives the Workplace Minister considerable powers to terminate industrial action or give directions in bargaining disputes.

Secret ballots before legally protected strike action will also require only 26 per cent support to gain approval because only half of eligible employees at a worksite will be required to take part in the ballot.

While the ACTU backed the new negotiating rights, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed some aspects of the bill and accepted the "reality" that voters had endorsed change at the election.

But the chamber's chief executive, Peter Anderson, said that new rights and compliance measures could add costs for employers, including non-unionised sites and among small businesses.

Mr Anderson said he was concerned that new arbitration powers proposed for Labor's umpire, Fair Work Australia, would lead to pay rises spreading to low paid and other workers without regard for productivity or economic circumstances.

A significant concern for Mr Anderson is that - despite Ms Gillard's denials - special bargaining provisions allowed for the low paid and "single interest employers" could lead to pattern bargaining of wage claims across entire industries.

Ms Gillard yesterday issued a warning to the Coalition, saying it was duty-bound to pass the legislation in the Senate because of the election mandate Labor achieved at the election for its policy. "This is a new era of industrial relations that gets the balance right, but what's more important is that the Australian electorate has endorsed this system," she said.

Ms Gillard said Labor's Fair Work bill, which will pass in the House of Representatives next week before being referred to a Senate committee, would "sweep away" Work Choices.

She outlined to parliament a giant piece of legislation that bases Australia's industrial relations system on collective bargaining with the powers of a strong umpire, renamed Fair Work Australia, to help settle disputes and impose wage settlements when low-paid workers cannot gain a result from bargaining, and for all workers when employers persistently refuse to co-operate.

Unfair dismissal rights are to be restored for all workers, but small business is given the concession of a 12-month probation period for employees before claims can be made. For other firms, the no-claims period is to be six months.

Work Choices effectively eliminated most unfair dismissal claims by abolishing them for any business with fewer than 100 staff.
Dismissing claims from some employers that Labor's bargaining regime was too heavily weighted in support of unions, Ms Gillard insisted that "at the end of the day it is up to a majority in a workplace".

The Workplace Relations Minister said unions should have a right to enter worksites based on having members, or eligible members.

But union officials would still be required to gain an entry permit and give employers 24 hours' notice.

They also could not legally disrupt work, meeting for "discussions" during breaks and at a venue chosen by the employer.

The Australian Industry Group yesterday rated Labor's bill as "workable" after protracted negotiations in which it believes concessions were won for employers.

AIG chief executive Heather Ridout said: "I think employers cannot have everything they want out of this bill. The Government has listened hard to employers, they've mitigated a lot of the big risks around content of agreements."

The Australian Mines and Metals Association was contemptuous of the legislation, with chief executive Steve Knott calling it "a return to the 1993 Keating era".

Mr Knott is displeased that unions could once again enter non-union sites in the Pilbara and sign up workers currently on individual contracts.

Ms Gillard yesterday challenged Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull to declare his hand on the bill and pass it.

"Decision day is coming for the Leader of the Opposition. He will have to decide what he believes on individual statutory employment agreements," she said.

Mr Turnbull said the Opposition would not oppose the bill in the House of Representatives but would subject it to a Senate inquiry and propose amendments.

The failings of Western Legal System

I have recently many news and reports of crimes being committed on newspaper and how the western legal system of red tapes and long process often allow criminals to escape tough punishment.

I think we as human have placed too much complexity in the legal system creating a sort of chaos and technicality. I read with sadness of white collar crimes, murder and recently the piracy in Somalia and i come to understand why the laws set by God was so harsh. For example if a man is to murder, it would be a life for a life, unless the victim is willing to accept an offering. In fact, as i read the first 5 books of the bible. I come to understand the purpose of such law. The tougher the law the better the deterrent of offending. Eg. In Singapore, drug use is not as rampant for one... if you are caught its death sentence.

In the western legal culture its always about Human Rights. I do think people who advocate Human Rights sorely miss out one point. When a murderer or killer takes a person life, he or she would have lost the right. Its just simple common sense. A person who deprives others from the right to live, then they themselves should be excluded from benefiting from this right. Rights are only given if the offending have consider other people's right to live, if they don't, then simply put
they should not complain that their rights are being violated.

If we follow the principle of governance explained in the bible, i do believe this world would be a better place. At least you know the victims of the crime would know that justice has been served.

It would be sad to come to a day when our legal system have failed the people they were suppose to protect and in the end Vigilante groups have to start operating. You wonder why nowadays, there are so many movies on super heros who combat the bad to protect the people - shows like Batman, Ironman, X-men, etc....heros who work outside the law because the law was useless in protecting them.

Hopefully one day someone will be bold enough to take some principles laid down in the bible and use it in the implementation of law to help govern the country.

10 places i would love to visit before i die

I was hearing a sermon by Kong Hee about engaging the marketplace and was really intrigued by some of the places of culture mentioned in his sermon. I felt abit nostalgic and wanted to see the world before i die. Its sort of like my bucket list

And if i have my wish here will be my Top places to visit

1. El Bulli - This is one place i would like to eat before i die. Its been the Top restaurant in the world 3 years running and have one of the most unique dishes. Reservations are booked years in advance . I must sample their food, apparently the food is served according to the music, the ambience. The whole dinner is like a symphony, where a invisible maestro pulls all the different senses together to leave you with an unforgettable night

2. Guggenheim museum - I would love to see the renowned Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The new Guggenheim Museum Bilbao by Frank Gehry was probably the most often mentioned new building of 1998 and 1999 in architecture circles. The composition continues a curvaceous, free-form sculptural style that has become a Gehry signature. The abstract, free-form components of this style were present in the early Gehry House, and a similarly sleek curvaceous cladding was displayed in the sculptural fish of the Fishdance Restaurant.

3. Church of the Holy Family- Would love to visit the Church designed by Gaudi in Barcelona Spain. I think its really one of those building that will take your breath away. When Gaudi desgined the church, it was either sheer madness or genius. This building took more than 100 yrs to complete.

4. Visit Disneyland in Florida .... its every Kids dream and mine too.....

5. Sit the Gondola in Venice..... yes... having watched so many romantic comedy, the Gondola sense is something i would love to experience

6. Walk the great wall of China and visit the forbidden place. Since i am a chinese, i should make a trip to China to get this out of my wish list

7. Theatre of Dreams - YES, who can miss out visiting my favourite team's home ground at Old Trafford. If i had my way, I would have love to study in England. But it was not to be

8 Visit Paris and the Eiffel tower - I am a romantic ... so i cannot leave this out

9 Pyramid of Egypt - Yes ... who can forget Lawrence of Arabia...

10 Visit Israel and see the place and birth of Jesus and the disciples. I know City harvest have an Israel Tour ... would not mind going if i ever have the chance.

11. My last but not the most likely is to climb Mount Everest...

So this sort of my bucket list.. i would be happy once i accomplish visiting all these places. We should all make a bucket list of places so life can be more fun. Kong Hee is right God gave human creativity and things we create sometimes help us to appreciate God even more.

Sons of Abraham

Yesterday, i watching the history channel on the documentary called son's of abraham. It was truly an eye opener. God's promised certainly came through for Abraham when God promised him that he will the father of many nations.

In fact many religion trace their one common root to Abraham. Through Issac his Son came forth Judaism and Christianity. And through Ishmael came the Islam faith. It was fascinating when the documentary brought us to Hebron the place of Abraham's grave. On one side was a Jewish Synagogue and the other a Mosque, in the middle surrounded by bars was the tomb of Abraham.

What struck me was that you can see the muslim praying from the Synagogue, and all these separated by a wall. The show talks about the common link of Abraham between the 3 big faith of the world. But admist all these i came to see the promise God made to Abraham, he was certainly the father of many nations.

Another name that stood out was these person called Nimrod. He was mentioned in the bible but not much was said of him. I was really intrigued because according to some story Abraham met with nimrod and contend with him about the one and only true God. So i decided to find out abit more.... below is from Wikipedia. Really fascinating reading.

Biblical accounts

Mention of Nimrod in the Bible is rather limited. According to the "documentary hypothesis" of the Bible's origin, the Jahwist writer(s) make the earliest mention of Nimrod.[1]

He is described as the son of Cush, grandson of Ham, great-grandson of Noah; and as "a mighty one on the earth" and "a mighty hunter before the LORD".

He also appears in the First Book of Chronicles and in the Book of Micah.

Nimrod is said to be the founder and king of the first empire after the Flood, and his realm is connected with the Mesopotamian towns Babylon (Babel), Uruk, Akkad and Calneh. He is mentioned in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10), where he is said to have founded many cities.

Owing to an ambiguity in the original Hebrew text, it is unclear whether it is he or Asshur who additionally founded Nineveh, Resen, Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, and both of these interpretations are reflected in the various English versions.(Genesis 10:8–10)

[edit] Traditions and legends

Though not clearly stated in the Bible, Nimrod has since ancient times traditionally been considered the creator of the Tower of Babel. Since his kingdom included the towns in Shinar, it is believed likely that it was under his direction that the building began. This is the view adopted in the Targums and later texts such as the writings of Josephus. Some extrabiblical sources[specify], however, assert to the contrary, that Nimrod left the district before the building of the tower.

According to Hebrew traditions, Nimrod was of Mizraim by his mother, but came from Cush son of Ham and expanded Asshur, which he inherited. His name has become proverbial as that of a "mighty hunter". His "kingdom" comprised Babel (Babylon), Erech (Uruk), Accad (Akkad), and Calneh, in the land of Shinar, otherwise known as the land of Nimrod (Genesis 10:8-10; 1 Chronicles 1:10, Micah 5:6).

Josephus wrote:

Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah, a bold man, and of great strength of hand. He persuaded them not to ascribe it to God, as if it were through his means they were happy, but to believe that it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also gradually changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning men from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence on his power… Now the multitude were very ready to follow the determination of Nimrod, and to esteem it a piece of cowardice to submit to God; and they built a tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about the work: and, by reason of the multitude of hands employed in it, it grew very high, sooner than any one could expect; but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built, that thereby its great height seemed, upon the view, to be less than it really was. It was built of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar, made of bitumen, that it might not be liable to admit water. When God saw that they acted so madly, he did not resolve to destroy them utterly, since they were not grown wiser by the destruction of the former sinners; but he caused a tumult among them, by producing in them diverse languages, and causing that, through the multitude of those languages, they should not be able to understand one another. The place wherein they built the tower is now called Babylon, because of the confusion of that language which they readily understood before; for the Hebrews mean by the word Babel, confusion…

If you want to know more... type Nimrod in google. Its good to know that Bible is not just some airy fairy story but one with historial and factual account.

To buy or not to buy House

In 3 weeks, i will be going to Singapore to put forth my proposal to buy another house. My parents are often conservative and would rather keep the money in the bank then to invest in property or shares.

I hope this time round, I can persuade them to invest together with me. Is the time right to invest. Interest rate has dropped, so the agent has told me that prices will start to rise. Unfortunately, the global climate has been causing much turmoil in the Australian economy. Job cuts, uncertainty and slowing economy, all these are the signs of a property market being at least stagnant for awhile

I think though Australia house prices are still a little high. The house price and wage ratio is comparable to the US. The unfortunate problem now is that i still think the interest rate in Australia is still too high.

Taking Singapore into account...with 350 K you could buy a HDB flat, and here in Australia you need that amount to get a old 3 x 1 house. Assuming exchange rate of 1 to 1 then the key is the interest rate and tax rate.

The problem is Australia tax rate are much higher than Singapore .. my friend pay less than a $1000 tax while poor me have to pay almost 20K ..why you might ask.. well to support people on welfare... people who are too lazy to work. In aisa, Family are responsible for one another while in Australia the government are responsible for the people. ....

Then there is the interest rate... singapore rate is 3% ... while Australia is still around 6-7%

My hope is the house price can fall a little more... so i can buy it abit cheaper... i really hope my parents will take my suggestions.

What luck !!!

Who needs a lottery win?

A recently retired New York man wanted to use his retirement funds wisely, so he decided to buy a home and a few acres in Portugal .The modest farmhouse had been vacant for 15 years; the owner and wife both had died and there were no heirs. The estate was being sold to pay back taxes. There had been several lookers but the large barn had steel doors and they had been welded shut. No one wanted to go to the extra expense to see what was in the barn and it wasn't complimentary to the property anyway... so, no one made an offer on the place. The New York gentleman bought it as is, paying just over half of the property's worth; moved in and set about to access the barn... curiosity was killing him.So, he and his wife bought a generator and a couple of grinders... and cut thru the welds.

What was in the barn...?The doors were welded shut, but a grinder took care of that

Tian Long Pa Bu

I watched this movie when i was really really young, and could not remember the details of the movie, so i thought i should give it a go since i bought the series last year and did not have the chance to watch it as yet.

The movie is not too bad. The good thing is that at least there are 3 heros in the movie each with his own story to tell. Sometimes when you have only one hero the movie tends to drag really long.

I have not finished watching but hopefully, i will get to it this week. I am suppose to lend this to my colleague so i think i have to catch up with this series.

Maybe that is why i was a bit lazy to do blogging... chinese series are really addictive.. when you start so hard to stop.

Cultural Mandate

Above is my recent Sermon acquisition. Cost me more than $100 SGD but it was well worth it. The cultural mandate have about 20 lessons but each one more interesting than the other.

Ps Kong brought some very valid and interesting points about engaging the marketplace

The teaching is very practical and opens you eyes to what scripture says and how it relates to the world we live in today.

You got to try it to believe it.

A totally eventful week

This week was another eventful week. One of our friends from singapore came over this time its Mevin and Shan. I am not sure why but it seems everyone comes at the same time. We decided to try the Vietnamese food along food park whose name i have to find in case i name it wrongly.

I had the impression that it was expensive but i was sorely mistaken. It was rather reasonable. The food was nice too. I shall endeavour to find out the name. It was To To or something like that.

Playing bridge... after dinner...

Dinner

Last night, was like a reunion of sort of the old hope of God Perth friends. Those that came were together with me since 1997. My good friend David Goh came all the way from Singapore to spend his second honeymoon, cause i told him to catch up... he is married before mebut have been slacking off in the family department ... side... so hopefully this time round he will be able to start a family...

So we decided to go to this korean restaurant in East perth. Nice atmosphere, facing the river and with a gondola like boat along the man-make river. It does feel like you were in another country.

The food was not too bad as well. Well i couldn't expect it to be too bad, bearing in mind that we were the one doing most of the cooking on the BBQ.

Below are the photo of the events. ....
